Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean today issued the following statement on the passing of Pennsylvania Lieutenant Governor Catherine Baker Knoll:
"Last night we lost a true champion for working families and a pioneer for women in politics. Catherine Baker Knoll was not just the first woman to serve as Pennsylvania's Lieutenant Governor, she was a tireless public servant and a true role model. Her leadership and her voice will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with Lt. Gov. Knoll's family in this difficult time."

Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean issued the following statement on tonight's election results:
"This has been a truly historic, transformational election. Tonight, our country chose hope over fear, the future over the past, unity over division. This election also reflects the passing of the torch to a new generation. Barack Obama inspired young voters across this country to answer the call and get involved. They responded to his promise to put partisanship and divisiveness aside and come together as one nation to find solutions. They turned out. They made calls. They knocked on doors. And they helped change our country.
"The American people have given all of us - Democrats, Republicans and Independents - a simple mandate: to work together find big solutions to the big challenges facing our country. We must work together to change the direction of our wonderful country and to restore America. With the help of strong Democratic majorities in Congress, President Barack Obama is going to set this nation on a course to provide the change we need.
"Today I am humbled by what we have accomplished over the last four years. Together, we can build on this moment to bring our nation together and work as one to overcome the challenges we face. It is what we as Americans have always done. Under Barack Obama's leadership, we'll do it again."

Stating that "Barack Obama has stood with us and it is now time that we stand with him" Frank LaMere of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska urged Native voters this week to come out in record numbers on Tuesday "to restore the country and the First Nations, and to acknowledge that we must give voice to the generations to come."
LaMere, the Chairman of the Native American Caucus of the Democratic National Committee who guided the Native American delegation at the national convention, is optimistic about the expected turnout and impact of the Indian vote. "Indian country has responded to the Democratic message of change and the need for urgency. From Maine to California and from Washington to Florida the Native focus on the political process is unprecedented. This attention can manifest itself with the election of Barack Obama and countless Democratic state and local candidates who will enjoy Native support but there is much work to be done. We must ignore the negativity of the Republicans that is designed to raise doubts in our minds and to intimidate voters like us. We know the truth about what the Republicans have brought us because we see how it affects our children and grandchildren every day. Let us remain mindful of this through our every action and through our participation in this political process till Tuesday."
"Let there be no mistake about this my relatives", LaMere added. "Every vote will count and will decide much about your future. Cast it proudly and carefully. We have young relatives in harm's way right now who have paid our way to enter the election booth."
"We have many who go without because our leaders have failed us. This election means much to them. Barack Obama understands this while others remain oblivious. Let us, as Native people, help him."
Appearing on ABC's This Week, Senator Lindsey Graham said "John McCain is truly an independent, stood up to his own party." But on the same show back in June Graham was asked if John McCain would offer a continuation of President Bush's economic policies. His answer: "Yeah, absolutely." [See it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXiY00lrOSQ]
In Senator Graham's defense, he is not the only McCain surrogate who has struggled to defend John McCain's promise of more of the same failed Bush economic policies. As a new video released by the Democratic National Committee today shows, McCain's own surrogates have repeatedly said that John McCain would continue President Bush's economic policies.
The video called "More of the Same" shows Joe Biden arguing that "not one fundamental economic issue on which John McCain has challenged George Bush or his policies" and a surrogates like Graham, Arizona Republican Jon Kyl, Missouri Representative Roy Blunt, and South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford agreeing with him.

BIDEN: There's not one fundamental economic issue on which John McCain has challenged George Bush or his policies. [Biden Campaign Rally, 10/21/08]
CHYRON: McCain Campaign: Your Response?
QUESTION: Senator Graham, John McCain is calling for an extension, or maybe even enhancement of the Bush policies?
GRAHAM: Yeah. Absolutely. [ABC's "This Week," 6/8/08]
LIZ CHENEY: I think on the really important issues that face the country, on issues like the war on terror and the economy, Senator McCain in fact is advocating those policies that those of us who supported President Bush and the Vice President believe are the right ones for this nation. [MSNBC, 6/23/08]
QUESTION: So it would be in effect a third Bush term when it came to pro-growth tax policies?
HOUSE REPUBLICAN WHIP ROY BLUNT (R-MO): It would be. I think it would be. And I think that's a good thing. [CNN, 5/11/08]
QUESTION: Can you name one economic issue where McCain has been different than the President?
SEN. JON KYL (R-AZ): I don't choose to. [MSNBC, 10/21/08]
QUESTION: Are there any significant economic differences between what the Bush administration has put forward over these many years as opposed to now what John McCain supports?
GOV. MARK SANFORD (R-SC): Um, yeah. For instance, take, you know, take, for instance, the issue of -- I'm drawing a blank, and I hate it when I do that, particularly on television. Take, for instance the contrast on NAFTA..
QUESTION: I don't see, uh, he's a huge supporter of free trade, John McCain. The Bush Administration supports free trade. I don't see a big difference between the two on free trade.
SANFORD: No, I was going to go to a point, which was what you would want is consistency with regard to that position. [CNN, 7/13/08]

The Democratic National Committee today announced that it will file a complaint with the Federal Election Commission on Monday morning to request a thorough investigation of the McCain campaign's most recent attempt to skirt campaign finance laws. According to the complaint, an analysis of the information provided by the McCain Campaign on its website shows that the campaign received 6,653 contributions that were at least $1,000 in excess of legal limit of $2,300--including one donor who contributed $56,047. The McCain Campaign website also lists 23 anonymous contributions in excess of fifty dollars, despite the legal requirement to maintain the name and address of each contributor any amount in excess of $50, and dozens of additional donors who provided incomplete information.
The complaint also cites the McCain campaign's pattern of ignoring federal election laws including violating the Presidential Matching Payment Account Act, the campaign's refund of approximately $50,000 in donations solicited by a foreign national, its continuing pattern of soliciting foreign nationals including the Russian Ambassador to the U.N and the FEC's September 30 request for additional information on numerous excessive contributions.
"The McCain campaign's lack of disclosure and disregard for the law he helped write raises serious questions about John McCain's commitment to the openness and transparency the voters expect from their leaders," said DNC General Counsel Joe Sandler. "In view of the McCain campaign's clear history of violating campaign finance laws, it is imperative that the Commission promptly conduct a thorough investigation of these violations; and a full audit of all of the McCain Campaign's contributions."

Transcript:
OLBERMANN: It was less than one week ago when Senator John McCain on national television warned the nation about a grave threat to democracy, maybe even quote "destroying the fabric of democracy." So, in our third story tonight, why have McCain and Sarah Palin stopped sounding the trumpet on this grave threat over the last few days? No, he didn't just forget. McCain's charge was that the national grassroots group, ACORN was committing widespread voter fraud, disenfranchising voters by registering fictional voters and Barack Obama had helped to fund ACORN. As we have explained previously, some part-time workers have been accused of ripping off ACORN because fictional voters do not vote.
But, there may be other reasons McCain has dropped the voter fraud rhetoric, namely new reports that McCain himself has funded not one, but two Republican owners of voter registration firms, both of whom are embroiled in very real charges of very real and concerted efforts to disenfranchise real voters.
First, meet Mark Jacoby. Yes, that would be a mug shot. He was arrested Saturday night in California on two counts of perjury and two counts of vote fraud. The charge that: Jacoby registered a fake address in California, so he would be legally eligible to register other voters in the state.
Mr. Jacoby's company is YPM, Young Political Majors. And YPM was no stranger to vote fraud claims before even Jacoby's arrest. Prosecutors in L.A., Ventura and San Bernardino counties are investigating Jacoby's company after dozens of voters accused YPM of "slamming," which is registering them as Republicans without their knowledge. The Los Angeles Times finding YPM registered more than 80% of its new Republicans without their knowledge or by misleading them.
So why does or what does YPM have to do with McCain? YPM makes money by registers not voters, but Republican voters specifically. Working not only as a subcontractor for the California Republican Party but also, according to the Ventura County Star, for the voter registration bounties offered by another man, Steve Poisner, a multimillionaire who offered YPM $5 for every new Republican registered. Like a bounty. He also happens to be the California co-chairman of the McCain campaign.
McCain cannot claim ignorance to YPM's track record. Jacoby is based in Arizona where a number of ballot initiatives may not be on the ballot after YPM gathered signatures for them and some of those signatures failed to pass muster with local election officials. And YPM was publicly accused of vote slamming before. In 2004 in both Florida and Massachusetts.
And then there is Nathan Spruill, former head of the Arizona Republican Party. He, too, now in the vote registering business and a serial denial of whistleblowers, who not only accuse him of slamming voters into the Republican Party but also claim he has torn up Democratic registrations in Oregon, Nevada, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Real registrations of real voters. Real Americans who thought they were registered, and may very well have been denied their right to vote in the real elections of 2004.
McCain's connection? This year Huffington Post reports a joint committee of the GOP and McCain campaign paid $175,000 for, quote, "registering voters" to the Lincoln Strategies Group, the voter registration company headed by Nathan Spruill.
So, why isn't anybody investigating Nathan Spruill? Since the days of John Ashcroft, Democratic members of Congress have asked the Justice Department to investigate real voter suppression, Congressman John Conyers specifically including Nathan Spruill in one of his responses last year. The stone walling in stark contrast to the Justice response-time on Republican claims of voter fraud. Last week, leaking word of its ACORN investigation the day after McCain pointed his finger at ACORN; previously pressuring prosecutors to pursue Republican claims about voter registration fraud; and firing some prosecutors who refused to do so, including most famously New Mexico's David Iglasius, who later revealed the Justice Department knew those claims in 2004 were bogus.
Talking Points Memo reported some of the same Republican operatives pushing voter fraud claims this year were at the heart of some of those bogus claims. According to one Republican Party operative's 2004 email, "I believe the voter ID issue should be used at all levels. You are not going to find a better wedge issue."
On a conference call today, the National and California State Democratic Parties called on the Republican Party to end their hypocrisy on voter registration fraud and sever all ties with long-time GOP Operative Mark Jacoby. Jacoby is the owner of Young Political Majors (YPM) who was arrested in California last weekend on two counts of voter registration fraud and two counts of perjury. Jacoby faced allegations of voter fraud in 2004 when he worked for Arno Political Consultants. YPM is currently under contract with the California State Republican Party to register voters. John McCain's California Co-Chair is also a leading supporter of the CA Republican State Party's voter registration efforts. Just yesterday, campaign finance reports revealed that the MCCain-Palin campaign and the RNC have paid Nathan Sproul, a Republican operative who has faced numerous charges of unethical and potentially illegal activity surrounding voter registration.
"We've made it clear that we don't and won't tolerate voter registration fraud," said DNC Communications Director Karen Finney. "But this exposes the absolute hypocrisy of John McCain and the Republican Party and their same-old Washington tactics. Over the past few weeks we've heard John McCain denounce voter fraud on the campaign trail while the RNC hurls false attacks, so the question is: where is the outrage now?"
"One month ago I called on state and local law enforcement authority to investigate a report that voter fraud being committed by a firm hired by the Republican Party of California called the Young Political Majors," said CA Democratic State Party Chairman Art Torres. Most importantly, what did the McCain campaign and the Republican National Committee know about this voter fraud ahead of time? These are the same "repeat offenders" we've had collecting signatures for the Republican party… in 2004, 2006, and 2007. The California Republican Party and the National Republican party need to immediately terminate its relationship with YPM or any other firm that is committing voter fraud."
"The Republican National Committee, the Republicans, the McCain campaign have been hammering away for weeks with the same old Washington politics, said DNC Legal Counsel Joe Sandler. "In fact, none of the charges that they've been talking about have actually panned out. In Montana they were forced to withdraw challenges, baseless challenges to 6,000 new voters. On a call yesterday, the RNC's communications director was forced to admit that he was unable to come up with a single example, of actual voter fraud. And today, on another McCain campaign press conference call, Florida Governor Charlie Crist, said he did not believe that voter fraud would be an issue, a problem of any kind in the state of Florida this year. It's the height of hypocrisy for the Republicans to harp on this theme."
The following are the facts on the McCain campaign and RNC's connection to Questionable GOP Operatives:
MCCAIN CAMPAIGN STEERED $175,000 TO COMPANY NOTORIOUS FOR SUPPRESSING THE VOTE:
McCain's Campaign Directed $175,000 To Lincoln Strategy, Whose Managing Partner Nathan Sproul Has Been Investigated On Multiple Occasions For Suppressing Democratic Voter Turnout. "John McCain's campaign has directed $175,000 to the firm of a Republican operative accused of massive voter registration fraud in several states. According to campaign finance records, a joint committee of the McCain-Palin campaign, the RNC and the the California Republican Party, made a $175,000 payment to the group Lincoln Strategy in June for purposes of 'registering voters.' The managing partner of that firm is Nathan Sproul, a renowned GOP operative who has been investigated on multiple occasions for suppressing Democratic voter turnout, throwing away registration forms and even spearheading efforts to get Ralph Nader on ballots to hinder the Democratic ticket. … That Sproul would come under the employment umbrella of the McCain campaign -- the Republican National Committee has also separately paid Lincoln Strategy at least $37,000 for voter registration efforts this cycle -- is not terribly surprising. Sproul, who has donated nearly $30,000 to McCain's campaign, has been in the good graces of GOP officials for the past decade despite charges of ethical and potentially legal wrongdoing." [Huffington Post, 10/20/08]
Lincoln Strategy Is Paid By California Republican Party/V8 Committee That Is Funded By McCain Victory California. Lincoln Strategy is paid by the California Republican Party/V8 committee that has been funded by McCain Victory California. McCain Victory California is a joint fundraising committee of the RNC, the McCain campaign and the CA GOP. [FEC]
MARK JACOBY ARRESTED ON "SUSPICION OF COMMITTING VOTER REGISTRATION FRAUD:"
Young Political Majors Owner Mark Anthony Jacoby Arrested On "Suspicion Of Committing Voter Registration Fraud." "Mark Anthony Jacoby, who owns the firm known as Young Political Majors (YPM), was arrested after allegedly registering himself to vote, once in 2006 and again in 2007, at an address where did not live. An investigation by the Secretary of State's Election Fraud Investigation Unit revealed that Jacoby twice registered to vote at the address of a childhood home in Los Angeles although he no longer lived there. The Secretary of State's fraud unit and the Ontario Police Department arrested Jacoby near an Ontario hotel just before midnight Saturday […] On October 3, the Public Integrity Unit of the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office charged Jacoby with four felonies: two counts of voter registration fraud and two counts of perjury. A warrant was issued for his arrest and bail was set at $50,000." [California Secretary of State Press Release, 10/19/08]
Jacoby Was Charged With Two Counts Of Voter Registration Fraud And Two Counts Of Perjury. "Jacoby was charged with four felonies: two counts of voter registration fraud and two counts of perjury." [AP, 10/20/08]
In 2004, Jacoby's YPM Worked For Arno Political Consultants, Which Itself Was Paid By The RNC. Young Political Majors LLC, or YPM, is a company registered by Mark Jacoby at a Town 'N Country residence...Jacoby could not be reached for comment. His company worked for a company called JSM Inc., which in turn worked for Arno Political Consultants, a Sacramento, Calif., firm that qualified 300 ballot initiatives in 20 states. The firm's largely conservative clients include the Bush/Quayle campaign, the National Rifle Association and RJ Reynolds. The company has also worked for Florida's class size amendment. The Republican National Committee hired Arno for a voter registration drive, said Mindy Tucker Fletcher, a senior adviser to the Florida GOP. Campaign finance reports show the RNC paid Arno $450,000 in one reporting period in September... Owner Bill Arno said the firm was registering voters in Florida, Ohio, Oregon and Nevada for the RNC. He declined to say what he was paid for the Florida effort, except to say he earned a monthly flat rate. [St. Petersburg Times, 10/23/04]
JACOBY'S COMPANY ACCUSED OF VOTER FRAUD IN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY:
San Bernardino County Democrats Charged That Young Political Majors Used Petition Drivers Throughout The County To Register Residents As Republicans Without Their Knowledge. "The San Bernardino County District Attorney's office is still collecting information regarding claims that a political group has fraudulently registered Democrats as Republicans to pad the voter rolls, officials said. 'To say it's under investigation is a bit of an overstatement,' said John Goritz, deputy district attorney for the public integrity unit. 'We're still receiving documents and evaluating it as it comes in.' Local Democrats have charged that a political firm, Young Political Majors, has used petition drives throughout the county to register residents as Republicans without their knowledge. The allegations arose when a substantial amount of registered Republicans were submitted to the San Bernardino County Registrar of Voters over a period of just two weeks. The group's owner and operator, Arizona-based Mark Jacoby, has denied any wrongdoing." [Daily Press, 9/28/08]
YPM HAS A HISTORY OF VOTER FRAUD ACCUSATION IN CALIFORNIA, FLORIDA, ARIZONA AND MASSACHUSETTS:
Young Political Major Has A History Of Fraud Complaints Nationwide And Have Been Accused Of Voter Fraud In Massachusetts, Florida And Arizona. "A company hired by the Republican Party denies it used deceptive practices to register 70,000 new Republican voters in the United States this year. Young Political Majors, has a history of fraud complaints nationwide, most recently in California where some new Republicans allege they were tricked into changing their registration, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday. The Times said it randomly interviewed 46 of the hundreds of California voters the firm recently registered and 37 of them -- 80 percent -- said they thought they were signing petitions for tougher state law enforcement penalties, not changing political parties, the Times reported. Voters in Massachusetts, Florida and Arizona have made similar accusations against Young Political Majors, which is paid $7 to $12 for each GOP registration it secures, the Times reported." [UPI, 10/18/08]
YPM A SUBCONTRACTOR TO THE CA GOP:
Young Political Majors Is A Subcontractor Of The CA Republican Party. "The San Bernardino County Democratic Party pressed its case Wednesday that the recent surge in Republican registration in the county is fraudulent. Democratic officials gathered in front of the county registrar of voters office and accused a company that specializes in gathering signatures of duping voters into switching their party affiliation. 'I am appalled at the deceptive and probably illegal tactics used by these crews operating in our communities,' said Carol Robb, chairwoman of the San Bernardino County Democratic Central Committee. But California Republicans say Democrats are just dusting off old tactics to attack the GOP in advance of a planned celebration next month marking the county becoming predominantly Democrat. 'They were going to have a party, and now they are upset they are having to put their cake on hold,' said Hector Barajas, a California Republican Party spokesman. The county issued 7,000 voter-registration forms to Young Political Majors, Registrar of Voters Kari Verjil said Wednesday. She has turned over information to the district attorney and secretary of state. Young Political Majors is a subcontractor to the California Republican Party, Barajas said. California Grassroots Mobilization is the vendor, he said." [Press Enterprise, 9/18/08]
Young Political Majors Asked People To Sign A Phony Petition To Increase Prison Time For Sex Offenders Of Outside Of Wal-Marts And Chaffey College, According To Democrats. "Democrats are demanding an investigation into a recent surge of Republican registrants in San Bernardino County, claiming voter registration fraud belies the numbers. Members of the San Bernardino County Democratic Party are holding a news conference today to discuss their claims and urge authorities to take action. Mark Kirk, an executive committee member of the county's Republican Party, denied his party was involved in any illegal or unethical action. 'Their claims have more to do with their disappointment in the registration numbers than anything,' he said Tuesday. 'It still wouldn't make a difference. We'd still be a red county.' The county has long been dominated by Republicans. In 2002, they outnumbered registered Democrats by 60,000. That gap narrowed to 30,000 in 2006. By May, it was down to 5,000. As of Tuesday, county Registrar Kari Verjil said there were 303,531 registered Democrats and 307,132 registered Republicans. … Verjil, who turned the complaint and supporting documentation over to the California Secretary of State's Office and the district attorney's Public Integrity Unit, said she is doubtful voter registration fraud has been occurring because she hasn't received calls from upset voters. Most of the alleged voter-registration fraud occurred when members of Young Political Majors asked people to sign a phony petition to increase prison time for sex offenders outside of Wal-Marts and Chaffey College, according to the Democratic Party. Voters were either asked to sign as a Republican after being promised it wouldn't change their political party or were asked to sign in two places, one of which was a Republican registration form, Robb said." [San Bernardino County Sun, 9/16/08]

YPM Is Paid $7 To $12 For Each Registration It Secures And Claims To Have Registered 70,000 Voters For The CA GOP. "The firm, which a Republican Party spokesman said is paid $7 to $12 for each registration it secures, has denied any wrongdoing and says it has never been charged with a crime. The 70,000 voters YPM has registered for the Republican Party this year will help combat the public perception that it is struggling amid Democratic gains nationally, give a boost to fundraising efforts and bolster member support for party leaders, political strategists from both parties say. Those who were formerly Democrats may stop receiving phone calls and literature from that party, perhaps affecting its get-out-the-vote efforts. They also will be given only a Republican ballot in the next primary election if they do not switch their registration back before then. Some also report having their registration status changed to absentee without their permission; if they show up at the polls without a ballot they may be unable to vote. The Times randomly interviewed 46 of the hundreds of voters whose election records show they were recently re-registered as Republicans by YPM, and 37 of them -- more than 80% -- said that they were misled into making the change or that it was done without their knowledge." [Los Angeles Times, 10/18/08]
MCCAIN CAMPAIGN CO-CHAIR MAJOR SUPPORTER OF CA GOP VOTER REGISTRATION EFFORTS:
Steve Poizner, The McCain Campaign's California State Co-Chair, Is Supporting The CA Fund That Is Paying Young Political Majors. "U.S. Senator John McCain's presidential campaign today announced that Steve Poizner, California Insurance Commissioner, has endorsed John McCain for president. Commissioner Poizner will serve as a State Co-Chair for the McCain campaign in California." According to the Ventura County Star, California "[s]ignature gatherers are paid from a fund partially supported by Republican gubernatorial hopeful Steve Poizner, a Silicon Valley multimillionaire who has offered Young Political Majors $5 per new GOP voter." [States News Service, 2/9/08; Ventura County Star, 10/20/08]
California GOP Chair Ron Nehring Praised Poizner For "Commitment To Building The California Republican Party." "Steve Poizner continues to demonstrate his strong commitment to the Republican Party in California. Steve led the effort to defeat Proposition 93 and protect voter-approved term limits, and has recognized the importance of party building efforts. Moreover, he has backed it up with direct support for our volunteers in the field," said California Republican Party Chairman Ron Nehring. "Our partnership in expanding Republican voter registration is the latest example of Commissioner Poizner's commitment to building the California Republican Party." [California Republican Party Press Release, 8/30/08]
Poizner Announced Plan With California GOP To Increase Bounty For Voter Registrations. "The California GOP and Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner, the second-highest elected Republican in the state, today announced the reauthorization and expansion of the Poizner-underwritten bounty registration grant. (The original grant provided by Poizner, providing an additional $3 per verified registration, will be extended beyond the August 31 program date through the October 20 registration deadline. The CRP's existing bounty payment will also be augmented by an additional $2 from Commissioner Poizner, bringing the total available bounty to $8 per verified registration for volunteer organizations and county Republican committees. The Democratic National Committee today updated the Count the Lies counter to reflect the 23 new fact checks published during and after last night's third and final Presidential debate. McCain showed how desperate and erratic his campaign has become by choosing to repeats some of the most widely debunked campaign lies on everything from health care to taxes.
With these new articles, no fewer than 156 fact checks have been published debunking McCain-Palin campaign lies since he promised to run a respectful campaign in February. Visit www.democrats.org/CountTheLies to see the updated Count the Lies counter.
Chicago Sun-Times: McCain Misleading Public in Role Ayers Played in Obama Political Career. "Obama said McCain--running ads featuring Ayers with Sarah Palin making him an issue on the stump--never said anything to his face. Ayers did not came up in the first two presidential debates. If McCain continues to insist that Obama launched his political career from Ayers' Hyde Park living room, he is misleading the public by overplaying the size and significance of Ayers' early support. Obama's campaign really was launched when he got the backing of then state Sen. Alice Palmer (D-Chicago), who wanted him to replace her as she was planning a run for Congress. Palmer's backing gave him entrée into local influential political circles." [Chicago Sun Times, 10/15/08: http://blogs.suntimes.com/sweet/2008/10/ayers_alone_did_not_launch_oba.html]
WP Fact Checker: McCain's Small Business Tax Claims Wrong. "John McCain made two assertions on corporate taxes, one that small businesses pay 50 percent of the taxes and the other that U.S. corporations are among the highest taxed in the world. Both are wrong. All corporate income taxes--including giant corporations and the smallest of businesses--account for only about 14 percent of federal revenues raised in the year, according to the Congressional Budget Office. Most federal taxes are paid by individuals, while fees and other taxes make up the rest. While the official corporate tax is high, compared to other countries, there are so many loopholes in the code that many companies pay little or no taxes. The General Accounting Office reported recently that more than half of U.S. corporations paid no federal income taxes during the boom years of the late 1990s, and those that did were able to shelter much of their income, generally by claiming deductions and credits. The GAO report showed that 61 percent of U.S. corporations paid no federal income taxes from 1996 through 2000, a period of rapid economic growth and rising corporate profits. An estimated 94 percent of U.S. corporations reported tax liabilities amounting to less than 5 percent of their total income in 2000. Indeed, small corporations were more likely to avoid taxation than large ones, the GAO said." [Washington Post, 10/15/08: http://voices.washingtonpost.com/fact-checker/2008/10/final_presidential_debate.html]
ABC News: Obama's Career Was Not Launched in Ayers' Home. "[McCain] made an attack, that his campaign has been making for weeks, saying that Obama's campaign was launched in the living room of William Ayers, of the Weather Underground. That's not true. Obama says his campaign was launched at a Ramada hotel, there were several coffees, right about that same time that summer one was held in Ayers' house, but it isn't even clear it was specifically for Obama." [ABC News, 10/15/08]
Politifact: Small Businesses are Exempt From Health Care Fine. John McCain talked a lot about "Joe the plumber" during the third presidential debate, saying Joe is an example of a small business owner who would not do well under Barack Obama's policies…But generally, Obama does not fine "small businesses." They are specifically exempt. We rate McCain's claim False." [Politifact, 10/15/08: http://politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/802/]
FactCheck.org: McCain "Off The Mark" On John Lewis Claim. "McCain was a bit off the mark when he said Obama did not repudiate the remarks of Democratic Rep. John Lewis. Obama did release a statement that said he 'did not believe' McCain 'or his policy criticism is in any way comparable to George Wallace or his segregationist policies.'" [FactCheck.org, 10/15/08: http://wire.factcheck.org/2008/10/15/john-lewis-and-the-news/]
FactCheck.org: McCain Repeats $42,000 Lie. "McCain has claimed yet again that Sen. Obama "voted twice for a budget resolution to increase taxes on individuals making $42,000 a year." As we've reported, a single taxpayer making more than $41,500 would have seen a tax increase, but a couple filing jointly would have seen no increase unless they made at least $83,000, and for a couple with two children the cut-off would have been $90,000. Regardless, the increase that Obama once supported as part of a Democratic budget bill is not part of his current tax plan." [FactCheck.org, 10/15/08: http://wire.factcheck.org/2008/10/15/42000-a-year/ ]
Washington Post Fact Checker: McCain Misrepresents Biden Iraq Proposal. "McCain just mispoke in accusing Democratic running mate of wanting to divide Iraq into 'three countries.' Biden did propose a plan in 2006 to decentralize power in Iraq by giving control of a major region each to the Kurds, Shiites and Sunnis. But his plan would maintain Iraq as a single country." [Washington Post, 10/15/08: http://voices.washingtonpost.com/fact-checker/2008/10/final_presidential_debate.html]
Washington Post Fact Checker: McCain Exaggerated the Ayers Relationship. "McCain exaggerated the closeness of the relationship between Obama and former Weather Underground founder Bill Ayers in claiming that his rival had 'launched his political career' in Ayers' living room. It is true that Obama attended a coffee meeting at Ayers' home after he announced his intention to run for the state senate in September 1995. But according to Lynn Sweet of the Chicago Sun-Times, who has tracked Obama's political career closely, the Ayers' event was only one of a series of coffees in the Hyde Park community where he lived. The kickoff for Obama's Senate run came at a meeting in the Hyde Park Ramada Inn on Sept. 19, 1995." [Washington Post, 10/15/08: http://voices.washingtonpost.com/fact-checker/2008/10/final_presidential_debate.html]
Washington Post Fact Checker: McCain Recycled False Tax Claim. "McCain just recyled a frequent claim, that Obama has voted to raise taxes on people making $42,000 a year. It's based on Obama's vote this year in support of a non-binding Democratic budget resolution that would allow the Bush tax cuts to expire in 2011 and 2013. Independent analysts have asserted this claim is misleading since the resolution did not actually call for raising taxes, but set budgetary targets based on the premise that the tax cuts would expire. Obama has separately promised that he would extend the Bush tax cuts for any family making less than $250,000." [Washington Post, 10/15/08: http://voices.washingtonpost.com/fact-checker/2008/10/final_presidential_debate.html]
New York Times: McCain Distorts Obama Health Care Plan Again. "As in the second debate, Mr. McCain charged that small businesses would be fined under Mr. Obama's health plan if they did not pay for health coverage as mandated by the government. And Mr. Obama, again, corrected him by pointing out that his plan would exempt small businesses from the requirement that employers either provide coverage for their workers or pay into a fund to subsidize coverage for the low-income uninsured." [New York Times blog, 10/15/08: http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/10/15/check-point-the-grand-finale/]
New York Times: McCain Falsely Says Obama Supports "Single Payer." "Mr. McCain said: 'Senator Obama wants to set up health care bureaucracies, take over the health care of America through - - as he said, his object is a single-payer system. If you like that - - you'll - - you would love Canada and England.' Mr. McCain was wrong in saying that Mr. Obama's proposal called for a single-payer system. Mr. Obama wants private insurers to continue in operation, but would subject them to strict federal regulation, so, for example, they could not deny coverage to people in poor health." [New York Times blog, 10/15/08: http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/10/15/check-point-the-grand-finale/]
New York Times: McCain Distorts on His Own Judicial Picks. "When asked whether he would appoint someone to the Supreme Court who disagreed with him and supported Roe v. Wade, Mr. McCain said he would apply no 'litmus test' in his Supreme Court appointments and would make his decisions "based on their qualifications." But Mr. McCain has gone much further while seeking to shore up his standing with Christian conservatives that make up the Republican base, giving an expansive speech at Wake Forest this year about his judicial philosophy and pledging to nominate strict constructionist, conservative judges--in other words, those who would oppose Roe v. Wade." [New York Times blog, 10/15/08: http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/10/15/check-point-the-grand-finale/]
New York Times: McCain Overstates Impact of Fannie and Freddie. "Senator McCain argued as the debate began, and as he repeatedly does on the campaign trail, that the blame for the financial meltdown lies with the mortgage-finance giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which were a unique hybrid-government-chartered but shareholder-owner--until they were forced into government conservatorships last month. 'The catalyst for this housing crisis was the Fannie and Freddie Mae (sic) that caused the subprime lending situation that now caused the housing market in America to collapse,' Mr. McCain said. Few analysts of the current crisis trace its roots to Fannie and Freddie, whatever their mistakes." [New York Times blog, 10/15/08: http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/10/15/check-point-the-grand-finale/]
New York Times: McCain Distort on Repudiating Remarks. "Mr. McCain accused Mr. Obama of failing to repudiate recent remarks by Representative John Lewis, a Georgia Democrat and legendary civil rights leader, who accused Mr. McCain and his running mate, Gov. Sarah Palin, of 'sowing the seeds of hatred and division' because of theinsults hurled by some at their rallies about Mr. Obama. Mr. Lewis likened the pair to former Gov. George Wallace of Alabama… The Obama campaign did quickly issue a statement repudiating the comparison to Wallace: 'Senator Obama does not believe that John McCain or his policy criticism is in any way comparable to George Wallace or his segregationist policies.' The campaign, however, did add that it was appropriate for Mr. Lewis to criticize the 'hateful rhetoric' at Mr. McCain's rallies." [New York Times blog, 10/15/08: http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/10/15/check-point-the-grand-finale/]
ABC News: Small Businesses Would Not Pay a Fine. "McCain was wrong to state that small businessman 'Joe the Plumber' would end up paying a fine if he refused to provide his workers with health insurance under Barack Obama's health-care plan. Under the Obama plan, small businesses are exempted from a requirement imposed on large companies that they contribute to a national health fund if they fail to make "a meaningful contribution" to their employees' health care costs." [ABC News Debate Live Blog, 10/15/08: http://blogs.abcnews.com/liveblogging/2008/10/live-debate-b-2.html]
ABC News: McCain Mortgage Plan is Not Similar to Hillary Clinton's. "During tonight's debate, McCain said that Hillary Clinton proposed the same kind of mortgage buy-up plan that he did. This is not true. While Clinton has proposed directly helping homeowners by having the government buy and resell mortgages that are in danger of foreclosure, her proposal would force financial institutions to take a loss. The McCain proposal, by contrast, is more generous to financial institutions and more costly for taxpayers." [ABC News Debate Live Blog, 10/15/08: http://blogs.abcnews.com/liveblogging/2008/10/live-debate-b-2.html]
ABC News: McCain Cannot Balance the Budget in Four Years. "But McCain is still saying he'd balance the budget within four years? This is silliness, and I think McCain knows it. I look forward to his campaign explaining how, exactly, he'll do this while extending the Bush tax cuts and funding bailouts." [ABC News Debate Live Blog, 10/15/08: http://blogs.abcnews.com/liveblogging/2008/10/live-debate-b-2.html]
AP: McCain's $700 Billion on Energy Claim Not True. McCAIN: "We have to stop sending $700 billion a year to countries that don't like us very much." THE FACTS: This is a reference to U.S. spending on oil imports. McCain has repeatedly made this claim. But the figure is highly inflated and misleading. According to government agencies that track energy imports, the United States spent $246 billion in 2007 for all imported crude oil, a majority of it coming from friendly nations including neighboring Canada and Mexico. An additional $82 billion was spent on imported refined petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel and fuel oil. A majority of the refined products come from refineries in such friendly countries as the Netherlands, Canada, the United Kingdom, Trinidad-Tobago and the Virgin Islands." [AP, 10/15/08: http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/D/DEBATE_FACT_CHECK?SITE=FLMYR&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT]
AP: Experts Skeptical of McCain Mortgage Plan. McCAIN: "Now, we have allocated $750 billion. Let's take 300 of that billion and go in and buy those home loan mortgages and negotiate with those people in their homes, 11 million homes or more, so that they can afford to pay the mortgage, stay in their home." THE FACTS: Ordering the government to buy up bad mortgages to cut homeowners' monthly payments might sound good, but experts are skeptical. They say the plan McCain is promoting is unlikely to solve the housing crisis that's pushing the economy toward recession. One big problem: The vast majority of the toxic home loans that are clogging financial markets and freezing up credit have been repackaged into complex investments that the government would be hard-pressed to unravel and buy. And the government could end up paying far more than they would ever be worth. That could primarily help banks and lenders with taxpayer money." [AP, 10/15/08: http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/D/DEBATE_FACT_CHECK?SITE=FLMYR&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT]
Politifact: McCain's Aim Still Off on Tax Votes. "Sen. John McCain revived a claim against Barack Obama that he's made before -- that Obama voted to raise taxes on people making $42,000 a year… But it's inaccurate to suggest votes on nonbinding budget resolutions, which don't have the force of law and don't include precise details on taxes or spending, are the same as votes on legislation that actually increases taxes. The resolutions would not change the tax code. Moreover, Obama as a candidate has proposed tax increases hit those couples $250,000 or more a year, or $200,000 for singles." [Politifact.com, 10/15/08: http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/801/]
FactCheck.org: Small Businesses Would be Exempt from Health Care Plan. "McCain said 'Joe the plumber' faced 'much higher taxes' under Obama's tax plan and would pay a fine under Obama's health care plan if he failed to provide coverage for his workers. But Ohio plumber Joe Wurzelbacher would pay higher taxes only if the business he says he wants to buy puts his income over $200,000 a year, and his small business would be exempt from Obama's requirement to provide coverage for workers." [FactCheck.org, 10/16/08: http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/factchecking_debate_no_3.html]
FactCheck.org: McCain Misrepresents Obama Health Care Intentions. "McCain claimed that Obama's real 'object' is a government-run, single-payer health insurance system like those in Canada or England. The McCain campaign points to a quote from five years ago, when Obama told a labor gathering that he was "a proponent of a single-payer health care program." But Obama has since qualified his enthusiasm for Canadian-style health care, and his current proposal is nothing like that." [FactCheck.org, 10/16/08: http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/factchecking_debate_no_3.html]
FactCheck.org: McCain Gets in Wrong on Imports. "McCain described Colombia as the "largest agricultural importer of our products." Actually, Canada imports the most U.S. farm products, and Colombia is far down the list." [FactCheck.org, 10/16/08: http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/factchecking_debate_no_3.html]

The Democratic National Committee released a new web video called "Stand Up" that compares John McCain's call today for voters to "stand up" and help send him to the White House today with his call for voters to "stand up" and help reelect President Bush in 2004. The video comes on the same day McCain tried to "reset" his erratic and flailing campaign by returning to his 2004 convention speech, in which he famously called on Americans to "stand up with our President."
After helping keep George W. Bush in the White House in 2004, McCain became one of his most loyal rubberstamps in Congress. McCain hit the road with the President to promote his risky scheme to privatize Social Security, joined President Bush in championing a deregulatory agenda that helped create the current economic crisis and stood shoulder to shoulder with the President on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. McCain even voted to support President Bush's agenda 95 percent of the time in 2007.
Now, McCain wants voters to stand up for four more years of the same failed policies and flawed politics by sending John McCain to the White House.

The Democratic National Committee today released the second in a series of web videos showing John McCain denouncing his own campaign tactics. The new ad, called "Who Is John McCain," shows McCain in 2000 denouncing negative campaign tactics and promising to fight the battle of ideas. The ad compares John McCain's aversion to negative campaigning in 2000 to his campaign's desperate and misleading attacks today.
The video comes as McCain is working overtime launching a barrage of negative attack ads aimed at "turning the page" from the economic crisis facing working families because - as one McCain advisor said, "If we keep talking about the economic crisis, we're going to lose." In fact, nearly 100 percent of John McCain's ads attack and distort Barack Obama's record.
