McCrory: Bush’s One and Only

Fri, 08/15/2008 - 9:55am

Pat McCrory is the only gubernatorial candidate in America campaigning with George Bush

RALEIGH -- As the AP reported this morning, George Bush is actively campaigning for only one candidate for governor this year: Pat McCrory.

"There are 11 governor races this year. Bush has been tapped to help only Pat McCrory, the GOP candidate in North Carolina." [AP, 8/15/08]

It’s no secret why – because Pat McCrory is one of George Bush’s closest allies when it comes to both politics and policy. McCrory supports President Bush’s private school voucher schemes, his opposition to stronger clean air standards, and his failed economic policies.

Dole/Bush Team Fought to Privatize Social Security

Thu, 08/14/2008 - 11:02am

Today is the 73rd anniversary of the Social Security Act becoming law, and though millions of hardworking Americans benefit from its provisions, Elizabeth Dole certainly isn’t celebrating.

She has been an outspoken advocate for privatization – voting to raid the fund’s surpluses, allowing the program to be subjected to the whims of the stock market and even going so far as to campaign with President Bush for this drastic and unpopular alternative.

DOLE/BUSH TEAM FOUGHT TO PRIVATIZE SOCIAL SECURITY

“Like President Bush,” Dole Supports Partial Privatization. Discussing privatization in September 2002, the Charlotte Observer wrote, “Dole, like President Bush, supports a partial investment program.” [Charlotte Observer, 9/17/02]

Patrick McHenry Votes Against Lower Gas Prices

Mon, 08/11/2008 - 3:55pm

Congressman Patrick McHenry's office says that he will be visiting Western North Carolina this week, and his office says he wants to talk about how to lower gas prices. But up in Washington, D.C., Congressman McHenry votes "no" to every attempt to establish a comprehensive energy policy that would lower gas prices for working families.

-McHenry voted "no" to requiring oil companies to drill on the 68 million acres that they already hold leases for, which could produce 4.8 million barrels of oil and 44.7 billion cubic feet of natural gas daily (H.R. 6251, 6/26/08). Drilling on these public lands could double U.S. oil production and cut oil imports by one-third.

Shady Big Oil Company Comes To Dole’s Defense In Reelection Bid

Thu, 08/07/2008 - 5:52pm

Big Oil is once again rewarding Senator Elizabeth Dole for her loyalty. First they gave her $266,456 in campaign cash, and today they came to her rescue again as she struggles to in her reelection efforts. Americans for Progress, a group founded and funded by Oilman David Koch, today began running a statewide radio ad trying to rewrite Elizabeth Dole’s history of advocating for Big Oil and Gas over working families every chance she gets.

“Elizabeth Dole’s hypocrisy knows no bounds,” said Hagan Campaign Communications Director Colleen Flanagan. “She campaigns across North Carolina pledging to stop outside groups from running ads in North Carolina, but now that her campaign’s in trouble, her Big Oil backers are rushing to her defense. It’s no surprise that Big Oil and Gas would ante up for their favorite Senator – they know when Kay gets to the Senate, they won’t be able to use her as their puppet, pull her strings or use her to do their bidding.”

North Carolina Seniors Rally against McCain’s Privatization Plan

Thu, 08/07/2008 - 2:03pm

Current and future Social Security recipients came together today to sound the alarm on the long term economic impact the McCain-Bush style privatization plan for Social Security would have on North Carolinians.

According to a report from the Campaign for America’s Future released today, McCain’s privatization plan would place an incredible burden on North Carolina’s communities and families to provide for the basic necessities Social Security now provides.

“Senator McCain has been quite clear, offering more of the same failed Bush economic policies and saying that he believes that the way Social Security works is a disgrace,” said Reva McNair, president of Senior Democrats of North Carolina.

McCrory, RGA’s Misguided Attack

Tue, 08/05/2008 - 2:43pm

Perdue campaign response to RGA attack

“Taking campaign finance advice from Pat McCrory and his allies is like taking economic policy advice from George Bush. Of course Pat McCrory’s already done that, in addition to bringing hundreds of thousands of dollars from Bush and the Republican Governors Association into North Carolina,” said Bev Perdue spokesman David Kochman.

Facts about Pat McCrory and the RGA NC 2008 PAC

• Democracy North Carolina – one of the leading government watchdogs in North Carolina – has filed an official complaint with the State Board of Elections based on reports that contributors to the RGA were not aware that their checks were instead being deposited into an account in North Carolina.

Voters abandon GOP for Dems

Tue, 08/05/2008 - 10:30am

Jennifer Steinhauer, The New York Times

Well before Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain rose to the top of their parties, a partisan shift was under way at the local and state level. For more than three years starting in 2005, there has been a reduction in the number of voters who register with the Republican Party and a rise among voters who affiliate with Democrats and, almost as often, with no party at all.

Though the implications of the changing landscape for Obama and McCain are far from clear, the registration numbers may signal the beginning of a move away from Republicans that could affect local, state and national politics over several election cycles. Already, there has been a sharp reversal for Republicans in statehouses and governors' mansions.
